Building Startup Accelerators That Actually Scale

Building Startup Accelerators That Actually Scale

Overview

Enabling institutions to drive innovation from within

In partnership with Incutex and supported by Inter-American Development Bank initiatives, a capability-building program was developed to strengthen incubators and accelerators in emerging ecosystems.

The goal was to equip institutions with the tools and methodologies needed to effectively support technology-based ventures—from early ideas to validated business models.

The Challenge

High potential ecosystems, limited structure

Many innovation ecosystems share a common gap: strong entrepreneurial potential but limited institutional capacity to support it.

Key challenges included:

  • Lack of structured methodologies to guide startups.

  • Limited experience in validating ideas with real users.

  • Inconsistent processes across incubators and accelerators.

This often results in time and resources invested in initiatives that fail to generate real value.

The Approach

Lean Startup as a framework for efficiency and impact

The program was built around Lean Startup principles, focusing on reducing waste and accelerating learning cycles:

  • Build: develop MVPs focused on solving real user problems

  • Measure: validate ideas through data and evidence

  • Learn: iterate continuously to refine solutions

Participants worked with practical tools such as:

  • Business Model Canvas.

  • Hypothesis validation frameworks.

  • Experiment design.

  • Evidence-based decision-making.

The Solution

Scaling knowledge through a train-the-trainers model

A train-the-trainers approach was implemented, targeting directors and key members of incubators and accelerators.

The program delivered:

  • Hands-on training in innovation methodologies.

  • Transferable frameworks for startup support.

  • Standardized processes for acceleration programs.

  • Alignment with institutional OKRs.

At the same time, technical support was provided to strengthen operational capabilities and ensure practical application.

Implementation

Short, intensive, and focused on real application

The program was delivered over a focused period, emphasizing action over theory:

  • Training sessions for accelerator and incubator leaders.

  • Adaptation of content to local contexts.

  • Practical exercises based on real use cases.

  • Continuous feedback and validation loops.

The objective was not only to train, but to leave capabilities fully installed within each institution.

Impact

From training to long-term ecosystem strengthening

The initiative enabled participating organizations to:

  • Strengthen their role within the innovation ecosystem.

  • Improve the quality of startup support processes.

  • Adopt modern validation and experimentation practices.

  • Build a foundation for scalable, sustainable ventures.

The most significant outcome was the creation of autonomous institutions capable of continuing the process independently.

Looking Ahead

Expanding capabilities across new regions

This model creates a foundation for future initiatives in regions with similar needs, particularly across the Caribbean, where demand for structured innovation support continues to grow.

The focus remains clear: turning ideas into validated, scalable businesses through strong institutional capabilities.
