At the World Developers Conference 2020 there will be a strategic announcement about the commercialization of Mac computers with ARM processors, thus breaking a historical relationship with Intel.
Although it is still several months before its launch, Apple needs to make these plans public so that software developers have time to optimize their applications in light of the new processor architecture for Mac, according to Bloomberg.
Apple has at least three ARM-based Mac processors, based on the upcoming iPhone A14 chip. This is all part of Apple’s “Kalamata” project and the first ARM Mac is expected to be ready in 2021.
Apple’s plan goes further and it hopes to be able to pass its entire range of computers to an ARM processor. From laptops to traditional desktop models that tend to come with more power and a higher cost.
The last time Apple announced a major change was in 2005 at the developer conference when they indicated that they would switch from PowerPc to Intel.
What is ARM?
They are processors that are used in many devices — many more than we realize. For example, they are present in Nintendo, Samsung, Qualcomm, Sharp, Yamaha. They are commonly used for consumer technology. Tablets, mobile phones, smart watches, portable consoles, and calculators are some of the examples of widely used hardware with this technology.
Improved graphics, energy efficiency and the use of artificial intelligence are among the significant improvements of ARM chips over Intel Processor chips as noted from Bloomberg.
According to Wikipedia, in 2005 more than 98 percent of the mobile phones sold used ARM processors.
As of 2009, ARM processors are approximately 90% of all integrated 32-bit RISC processors.
ARM architecture is licensable. This means that ARM Holdings’ core business is selling IP (Intellectual Property) cores, these licenses are used to create microcontrollers and CPUs based on this core.
